Penny Dreadful, “Verbis Diablo” Photo Recap

Hey my Dreadful babies, continuing from where we/I left in Penny Dreadful, “Verbis Diablo” began with a scared and sleepless Vanessa telling Malcolm she had enough of the naked witches haunting her and she couldn’t tell the difference between her dreams and reality.

Malcolm was sympathetic.

He comforted her and made a suggestion to ease her mind a little.

Then we found our weird love triangle/monster family getting to know Brona’s new undead version who was practically a little baby.

But Caliban/John was eager to have her respond quickly so he could teach her some poetry.

Victor seemed a bit attached to his new creation and slightly possessive of her as he reacted to Caliban’s enthusiasm with barely hidden contempt.

Caliban wanted to know if Brona’s memory would come back but Victor sassed him, reminding how he didn’t exactly have the time to figure that out with his former undead son. Because Caliban had rudely killed him and Victor wasn’t over it. smtvlcsnap-2015-06-20-15h18m17s333

Caliban did what he always does when he wants to intimidate Victor, he casually towered over him.smtvlcsnap-2015-06-20-15h18m24s432

Victor told him she would need a little time to remember her language skills so Caliban left reluctantly.

So the next time we saw her Victor had given her a new name “Lily” (which means “Resurrection” of course) and she was speaking fluently, minus her old accent.

Yup. Accent dropped conveniently. But she was feeling intense emotions, I guess coming back to life does that to you?

Victor looked happy to have someone in his life who threw herself into his arms when she needed guidance.

Having no family we know of, he took the chance to create himself a perfect “cousin” and make her into his ideal woman.

Malcolm had taken Vanessa to some underground care facility to help people suffering from cholera. Because helping others when you feel the worst makes you feel better.

It seemed to be working for Vanessa as well, because when she saw a lonely dude probably waiting for soup (and his new girlfriend to be prepared for him) she went to him with a warm smile.

Of course they had this super intense conversation about poetry, life, religion and beauty.

I want to call Caliban John during his scenes with Vanessa because he’s completely two different people with Victor and the other people he meets. One is “Caliban the monster” that he became because of Victor and the other one’s “John the poetic man” he yearns to be.

So John was kind of shy at first but when Vanessa openly told him about her unstable relationship with God, he basically told her that after reading Wordsworth, poetry was his religion and then this conversation followed :

John: “The glory of life surmounts the fear of death. Good Christians fear hellfire, so to avoid it, they are kind to their fellow man. Good pagans do not have this fear, so they can be who they are. Good or ill, as their nature dictates. We have no fear of ‘God,’ so we’re accountable to no one but each other.”

Vanessa: “That’s a profound responsibility. Do you truly not believe in heaven?”

John: “I believe in this world. And those creatures that fill it. That’s always been enough for me.”

Vanessa seemed interested in this philosophy, because in her world hell, God and Devil are very real. We know she has strong beliefs that lead to her condemning herself and believing she deserves to be punished for her sins, which probably have a great impact on her vulnerability against the Devil.

John told her he saw secret mysteries, “a heaven in a wildflower” in life, reciting a poem by William Blake. I think the fact that he was finally going to get a girlfriend was a big factor in this optimism but anyway.

“To see a World in a Grain of Sand

And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,

Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand

And Eternity in an hour.”

The nun told Vanessa she was needed and before leaving she told John he had beautiful eyes, which even made me emotional so imagine how John/Caliban felt. The only kind words he ever heard? Probably.

Then we saw Dorian who was still pretty sad after being rejected by Vanessa but suddenly, a new character showed up.smtvlcsnap-2015-06-20-15h24m29s989

She came on pretty strong which impressed Dorian because that’s how he is.  smtvlcsnap-2015-06-20-15h24m34s706smtvlcsnap-2015-06-20-15h24m36s940smtvlcsnap-2015-06-20-15h24m45s687

She gave him a card, telling him that’s where she worked and she’d be waiting.

(Just like I’m still waiting for Dorian’s storyline to have a bigger connection to Vanessa/The Devil. But no worries, I love you Dorian, stay beautiful.)

Next, we had this lady working her charms.

She made some magic and Malcolm was completely done for.

Then this ball of sunshine dropped in, making even Sembene smile.

Yes, that’s a reaction we all give to Josh Ethan, Mr. Lyle.

“American! I’m undone!”

Me too. (Ferdinand Lyle is a gem.)

He just becomes obsessed.

Later Victor drops in with his “This is all ridiculous, may I get back to raising my dead babies?” routine.

Of course, the possessed got burned at the stake. Fun times!

Victor: Gotta love religion.

(Gotta love Victor.)

Dorian visited Angelique who said she hoped he knew what he bought. Meaning she was transgender.

Gurl, this is Dorian. He wanna.

Evelyn Pool and Malcolm Murray were getting closer.

Victor dyed Lily’s hair and gave her a makeover as he told her imaginary memories they shared.

And what about Caliban/John, Victor?

While Ethan was helping Ferdinand Lyle find the artifacts (that the posssessed priest wrote all over) he found this.

“The wolves will protect.”

He can’t concentrate with Ethan around.

Ethan doesn’t think wolves protect though, he tells a story and says “They didn’t protect anything, they just fed.”

Ferdinand is, of course, impressed with the life Ethan’s lead. (I just love Simon Russell Beale’s acting.)

Back to our monster family, Lily meets John and it’s awkward and hilarious:

Same, Lily, honey.

In the meantime, guess who was being horrible and blackmailing Mr. Lyle??

Then she took the baby, (actual baby) her daughter Hecate kidnapped and went inside her weird doll house.

She put the baby’s heart in a Vanessa shaped doll and it wasn’t cute.smtvlcsnap-2015-06-20-15h38m42s579 smtvlcsnap-2015-06-20-15h38m50s572

Vanessa felt something was wrong but of course she didn’t know why.

So what do you think Evelyn’s planning to do with the doll other than saying creepy things at it?
