Da da da da da Supergirl’s here!
If you’ve seen the first episode, this is the recap for you. Before we start: this is a fluffy, happy, optimistic, cute, cheesy show that practically screams “girl power” and it’s definitely necessary and important for these reasons.
It begins with Kara Zor-El leaving Krypton to protect her baby cousin Kal-El.
We all know great power = great responsibility.
In the meantime, baby Kal-El:
But her mother’s plans don’t work out and Kara arrives a bit late, meeting Kal-El when he’s all grown up.
She gets a new family.
Then Kal-El just leaves her because he has a world to save and ain’t nobody got time for a newbie alien.
Then we meet her in present day, where she works as an assistant and cutely interacts with her co-worker/friend Winn.
He asks her if she’d like to go see a movie, which is obviously his way of asking her out but she tells him she already has a date.
Then her boss Cat Grant (Precious Calista Flockhart) shows up in all her glory:
They have a relationship like:
Kara meets Jimmy/James Olsen.
He’s won a Pulitzer for his Superman photo and Kara appreciates the work.
She does this thing when she’s excited and makes Sim noises:
James tells her she looks like Superman a bit around the eyes. From the way he’s looking at her, I’d say he’s either coming onto her or he’s got the hots for Clark Kent.
Kara gets flustered really fast.
While she prepares for her date, her sister Alex shows up to help her.
Sister love.
Kara is upset she is spending her time as an assistant instead of making a difference but her sister says her “normal” life isn’t so bad.
Later her date doesn’t go so well. (Hello, James Elton from “Emma Approved”)
But then:
She flies to save Alex.
I love it when this happens.
For a while it’s like:
This precious muffin seems to be enjoying herself.
But then:
Suddenly all eyes are on her.
Later that night:
She receives praise AND criticism.
“Well, you try saving a plane for the first time and see if you don’t make a mess.”
True, Kara, so true.
Then her sister shows up.
Alex thinks it’s reckless of Kara to show herself to the world but Kara wants to be a hero and who can blame her?
The next day at work, Cat Grant asks James his opinion on the mysterious lady on the news.
He knows what he’s talking about and Cat is so ready to make some money.
Later Kara decides to reveal her identity to her friend Winn.
Yeah, I’m not really sure he only sees her as a friend.
Then Kara actually flies and Winn has feelings about it.
In the meantime, villains show up (Hello, Rigsby from “Mentalist”).
Winn and Kara work at her costume & start their small superhero business.
Cara gets an improved cape and adds her family’s coat of arms to her costume.
Later she gets abducted by D.E.O. agents and *gasp* Alex is one of them!
Director Hank blames her for the alien criminals on earth.
He wants her to go back to getting people coffee if she wants to help. (Rude, director guy.)
Alex is sad but Kara doesn’t want to talk.
The next day Kara goes to work to find out she’s being called “Super Girl”.
Cat explains why there’s nothing “less important” about being a “girl” and she tells Kara maybe there’s something wrong with her if she doesn’t understand that.
As she’s about to fire Kara, James shows up.
He explains how Kara got a clear photo of Super Girl and Cat decides to give her another shot.
While James and Kara argue about how she really needed his help Kara hears an alien criminal’s personal message.
She immediately flies off to kick this dude’s butt.
He’s pretty strong and probably more experienced in killing other aliens so Kara’s situation doesn’t look so bright until Alex comes to save her.
Later Kara’s a bit heartbroken.
Alex tries to convince her to come back and save the world as she’s meant to.
It all feels very Frozen.
But then Alex makes her talk to her mother’s hologram.
And it totally works.
They become a badass team of sisters.
So Kara tries to kick this guy’s butt one more time.
She succeeds with her sister’s encouragement.
The next day:
Of course James knows she’s Super Girl. He even gives her Kal-El’s blanket so she can have a cape without bullet holes.
They have a moment when James tells her Kal-El/Superman/Clark Kent fully supports her decision to be a hero.
James reminds her she should get to work so she flies away.
In gif form for reasons:
Winn’s reaction:
Cat’s reaction:
Kara: Earth doesn’t have just one hero anymore. Now it has me. Now it has Supergirl.
DA DA DA DAAA-
But wait, we see two people talking about her and one of them is her aunt Astra, who looks exactly like her mother and wants to kill her.
Great!
I’m kidding, it’s not great. But I do like her Disney Villainess voice.
