Hello my sweet Dreadfuls,
The episode began with Vanessa reliving the horrible flashback because Ethan thought she needed to share it with the whole gang.
Victor, as always, looked suspicious because he’s a man of science and Vanessa was talking about witches.
I just love how he apologizes immediately to Vanessa. They’re witches and that’s that.
So they gather around the table to translate the possessed priest’s words on the artifacts.
And they figure out it’s the Devil’s own words. How exciting!
Later, as Victor’s leaving he tells Vanessa how there’s always something worse than what he can imagine. (What an optimist.)
He asks her if she could help him with an errand.
We all know that errand is Lily and it’s fun to see Victor so excited. I also love the sibling vibe I get from Vanessa and Victor. It makes their scenes oddly warm and comforting in their shared, familiar creepiness.
Then Vanessa notices Sembene and wonders what he’s doing.
Sembene says he’s waiting and watching in case the witches attack. Duh, Vanessa.
And this CSI London dude is intense as usual while he checks around the crime scene where Hecate stole a baby after she killed her parents.
Back with our favorite man baby/nice guy Caliban, we run into Lavinia, who tells him that the trick to aging the wax figures is the eyes.
This scene ends with the girl telling him not to give up on life and once again Caliban/John smiles and finds hope in a sweet woman’s words just like he did with Vanessa the last time.
*Sigh* Okay, I get it. We feel compassion for him for the life he never asked, we might even relate to him at times for feeling abandoned by his “creator”, for suffering as he did, for his isolation and “forever alone”ness. But is this going to keep happening with every woman he meets? We already know it’s rare for him to be treated with kindness in a world where he looks different. So I’m kind of tired of seeing the same scene where he’s suddenly so inspired whenever a pretty woman says something nice to him. And even though I feel sympathy for him when he’s not killing people to throw a tantrum or harassing women and demanding love, it doesn’t feel genuine for these characters to function as his inspiration source.
Speaking of exhausting, Hecate decides it would be a good idea to test Ethan’s superhero reflex.
And supercop was already working his own powers, finding the dude who got chewed on by Ethan last season.
But the best part of the whole episode was of course the following scene:
Victor asking Vanessa’s help to shop for Lily was hilarious to watch and not just because it’s Victor but also because Vanessa needed to laugh a little and she used this opportunity to enjoy herself as Victor got more and more flustered with every passing moment.
It got better.
But then this cuteness??
And the best part:
Vanessa laughing is everything.
And then we saw Ethan was chatting with the nice lady (horrible witch from hell) and I was genuinely worried for a while because Ethan couldn’t be fooled, right?
Ha ha, busted!
(Even though he thinks his father sent her, still)
Back with our weird immortal boy Dorian and his new love interest Angelique, things seemed to be getting serious.
A table tennis match in public surely meant some kind of commitment.
Or maybe it was just Dorian loving to provoke society and it didn’t mean much to him, unlike its probably significant importance for Angelique. (Who knows? Not me. Although I totally do. Dorian, you little shit.)
Then we had our monster numero 3: Lily
Her makeover status was a success. (for the male gaze)
Obviously her corset and high heels hurt her so badly she had a hard time walking or even breathing, which made her question her existence and why she had to go through this to please anyone and especially Victor “asshat” Frankenstein. (I love him but this doesn’t mean I’m blind to his asshattery)
They have this revealing dialogue:
“It’s very tight.â€
“That’s meant to be the point.â€
“I can barely breathe!â€
“I think that’s meant to be the point, too. Ladies aren’t meant to exert themselves.â€
“I won’t be able to walk!â€
“Lots of young ladies do, you shall as well.â€
“Do all women wear corsets?â€
“Most. Of a certain class, anyway.â€
“So, women wear corsets so they don’t exert themselves?â€
“What would be the danger if they did?â€
“They’d take over the world. They way we men prevent that is by keeping women corseted. In theory and in practice. They’re meant to flatter the figure.â€
“To a man’s eye, anyway. “
Then her voice changes slightly as she says:
“What we do is for men, isn’t it? Keep their houses, raise their children, flatter them with our pain.”
Victor’s too busy admiring her body at this point to see her resentment, isn’t it too much for a woman who doesn’t have her memories?
Then her voice softens:
 “Does this corset flatter me?â€
“Do you want me to wear it?â€
“I want nothing to cause you pain. Not for flattery, or my vanity. Or anything under the sun. Take it off, the dress will look fine without it.â€
“Thank you. But I’ll keep the shoes on if I may.â€
Honestly, all I saw in her eyes at this point was merely curiosity and controlled resentment as if she was testing Victor. The way she asks for his permission to keep the shoes because they please him should have made him question her state of mind but even though he tells her he doesn’t want her to suffer, we know this is coming from the guy who actually killed her just because he needed a “body” for his monster. (And no, it doesn’t matter that she was already dying.) So to me, nothing about Lily’s face says that she likes this new existence of hers. If her memory comes back at all, it wouldn’t be surprising for her to be angry for the way she’s been used and manipulated into a “love interest” (to put it mildly.)
After that we were back at the Murray residence, where Ferdinand Lyle warned Malcolm about Evelyn Poole and he was adorably worried but couldn’t tell the truth because he’s being blackmailed by the witches.
Ethan also told Vanessa about Hecate and Vanessa corrected him, saying she was one of the witches.
Later Ethan decided to help Sembene.
They love each other so much.
(Also, dear show, can we get more Sembene scenes already? It’s the second season and we know nothing about his past or present for that matter.)
Malcolm told Vanessa the devil basically mentioned her in his diaries.
And not exactly like:
Her name’s Vanessa and she has pretty hair.”
but more like:
“MY DARK QUEEN AND I SHALL RULE THE WORLD”
which is, for me, beyond romantic.
But for some reason, Vanessa didn’t like that.
She apologized immediately after raising her voice. Adorable. Then she went to say goodnight to the nice gentlemen downstairs.
   Vanessa: Good night, gentlemen.
Ethan: Don’t tell me you’re going to Miss Sembene’s… What is that?
   Sembene: Buttercream torte.
Ethan: Two words I thought I’d never hear coming out of your mouth.
Ethan, stop flirting with the guy.
After Vanessa went to her room Ethan decided to check the suspicious wallpaper downstairs.
But of course, Sembene to the rescue.
In the meantime, the one in Vanessa’s room managed to get some of her hair.
Which pissed Vanessa off greatly.
She ran like the naked baby monster she was and bragged to her friends.
Hecate seemed a bit hurtabout Ethan’s earlier comments because she took a jab at him about her sensible shoes.
Note to self: Witches are sensitive people. Be nice.
Vanessa came downstairs to see her protectors freaking out.
Sh*t indeed, Malcolm.
So, how can they stop the witches if they can’t even protect Vanessa’s hair from getting stolen?
Tough, but I have faith in our bamf squad.
